Wellness
Diet, exercise, supplements, and lifestyle -- everything that supports healing.
Foods to Eat
- Fish -- DHA/EPA omega-3s, anti-inflammatory
- Broccoli sprouts -- Sulforaphane inhibits HDAC2/EZH2 (tumor drivers)
- Legumes & lentils -- Plant protein, fiber
- Berries -- Antioxidants, anti-inflammatory
- Avocado -- Healthy fats, potassium
- Olive oil -- Oleocanthal (anti-inflammatory)
- Garlic & onions -- Allicin, immune support
- Green tea -- EGCG, antioxidant
- Turmeric + black pepper -- Curcumin absorption (pause during chemo days 1-5)
- Flaxseed -- Omega-3, lignans
- Dark leafy greens -- Folate, minerals, fiber
Foods to Avoid
- Creatine supplements -- Fuels CKB, gives tumor energy
- Red meat (beef, pork) -- IGF-1, heme iron promotes tumor growth
- Dairy -- IGF-1, inflammatory
- High-heat cooked foods -- AGEs (advanced glycation end products)
- Processed sugar -- Insulin spikes, feeds inflammation
- Processed/cured meats -- Nitrates, carcinogenic
- Alcohol -- Liver burden, immunosuppressive
Timing with Treatment
Chemo days 1-5: Pause sulforaphane, high-dose turmeric/ginger, and chaga extract. Ifosfamide relies on oxidative stress to kill cancer cells -- antioxidants can reduce its effectiveness.
Recovery days 6-21: Resume sulforaphane (broccoli sprouts), antioxidants, and supplements. This is when the body repairs and the epigenetic strategies do their work.
Why Exercise Matters for Riley
Exercise activates CKM (muscle creatine kinase, score +0.18), which may suppress cancer growth. It releases anti-cancer myokines (IL-6, irisin) and boosts BHB (beta-hydroxybutyrate), a natural HDAC inhibitor. Exercise also redirects creatine kinase activity from CKB (tumor fuel) toward CKM (muscle function). Local activity near the knee may help "heat up" the cold tumor via inflammation.
Recommended Activities
- Walking -- Start with 15-20 min, build up
- Light stretching -- Flexibility, blood flow
- Resistance bands -- Muscle activation without heavy load
- Light strength training -- Boosts myokines, builds resilience
- Swimming/water exercise -- Low impact, full body
- Yoga -- Flexibility, stress reduction, breath work
Guidelines
- Target: 150 min/week if feasible
- Chemo days 1-5: Go easy, listen to body
- Recovery days 6-21: Push a bit more
- Post-chemo: Gradually increase intensity
- Focus: Consistency over intensity
- Track: Log activities to see progress
Important: Confirm all supplements with oncology team
Some supplements interact with chemotherapy. Always check with Dr. McGoldrick or the sarcoma MDT before adding or changing supplements.
Current Stack
- Fish oil (DHA/EPA) -- Anti-inflammatory, membrane support
- Vitamin D + K2 -- Bone/immune health
- Magnesium -- Nerve/muscle, replenishes Ifosfamide depletion
- Turmeric + ginger -- Anti-cancer (pause chemo days 1-5)
- L-Theanine -- Possible liver protection, calm focus
- Broccoli sprouts / sulforaphane -- HDAC/EZH2 inhibitor (pause chemo days 1-5)
Paused During Chemo Infusion
- Chaga extract -- ORAC 147,000, too antioxidant during chemo
- High-dose turmeric/ginger -- Antioxidant effect conflicts with chemo mechanism
- Sulforaphane -- Pause days 1-5, resume days 6-21
